The Asperger Student

Students' Strengths

We believe that we can tap into our students' higher level of strengths such as:

•Ability to learn just by listening.
•Ability to verbally recap in great detail any lesson they have learned.
•Advanced reading skills, once reading is discovered.
•Sophisticated vocabulary in many topics of interest.
•Some have photographic memories.
•High level of computer competency.
•Hightened understanding and respect of nature.
•The ability to manage their behavior, unless they are overly stressed.

Students' Path to Learning

Our students will have a unique path to learning:

•Each child will be provided with an organizational tool to manage the days' learning.
•Each child's particular area of interest will be used as the basis for their learning.

Students' Individuality

Our strategies will build and foritfy each student's individual personality by helping with:

•Difficulty modulating behavior
•Difficulty writing due to dyspraxia (pain when holding a pencil).
•Overstimulation from environmental factors (such as lights, smells, temperature fluctuations, weather, sounds, and vocal tones).
•Processing speed due to a four second delay in hearing-to-brain processing.
•Understanding facial expressions and body language.
•Interpreting figurative expressions such as jokes and current sayings.
